Madame Grès, also known as Alix Barton, born in 1903 as Germaine Krebs was one of the genius designers of the 30s. Madame Grès originally trained to be a sculptor which might explain why her dresses were moulded so perfectly to fit the female form.

Most of her designs employed the use of silk jersey and drapery techniques. Oftentimes, a dress would have fabric running uninterrupted from neckline to hemline, tucked, draped and nipped in specific places resulting in the works of art that were Madame Grès' dresses. Her influence is seen in the presentations of modern designers today. As with Madame Vionnet, Alix was also famed for cutting on the bias as well, which would further explain why her dresses looked and sat the way they did. Hopefully the House of Grès is resurrected soon and the creatives behind it do right by the sphinx of fashion.

I love knitwear and I think designers such as Mark Fast are absolutely genius, so it comes as no surprise that I fell head over Topshop flats in love with Sandra Backlund when I discovered her collections! The Beckmans College of Design graduate has put out quite a few collections and has been featured in a considerable number of editorials.

I think she does knitwear the way knitwear ought to be done; fantastic shapes without being unecessarily bulky.

I think of all her work, this is the photograph that I am drawn to the most. I love how one of them is smiling ever so slightly as her eyes light up, while the other wears a frown. In an interview with David Segal of The Washington Post in 2005, the twins, Cathleen and Coleen Wade as they were known at the time, said that they had no recollection of the instance of this now famous photograph of them.

Diane, known for capturing those she described as 'freaks', found the girls at a party held for twins and triplets in their neighbourhood.

She was so beautiful. Cindy Crawford was apparently often referred to as 'baby Gia' due to the resemblance she bore to the tragic model. She was of Irish, Italian and Welsh heritage.
Actress Angelina Jolie won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the model in 1998 biopic 'Gia'.

I remember seeing this graduate collection from Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp graduate, Irina Shaposhnikova last summer and I thought it was so genius. The Academy is a breeding ground for incredible talent! Ann Demuelemeester, Dries van Noten and Martin Margiela have all passed through this prestigious institution.

According to Irina, this collection, called 'Crystallographica' was inspired by the geological forms of crystals and minerals. Fashion week is round the corner. I really hope we see a collection from her!

The draping in this collection is a nice nod to label pioneer Madame Vionnet's wonderful art of moulding fabric and creating some of the most breathtaking pieces of her time. Madeleine Vionnet, a pioneer of the bias cut, founded the label in 1912. She would famously craft her designs on miniature mannequins first. The label was briefly revived in 2007 with a fall collection by Greek designer Sophia Kokosalaki. I look foward to seeing where Rodolpho Paglialunga takes it.

I always say that Fall 2008 had so many good shows that it's hard to play favourites. This Burberry Prorsum collection however, was really top notch for me. The layered feathers used to create scarves, dresses and coats added a nice touch. The jewel toned palette was also a delight to see coming down a Fall runway show. Another noticeable feature was the knotted drapes which Christopher Bailey revisited in his SS 2010 show.

This show was really beautiful with cuffs, corsages and dresses half dipped in real silver, full skirts and fishnet stockings, but it was the thick face veils that caught my eye. I love how they're not as delicate as usual, but are still beautiful and allow the face to be seen.
